Emeli Sandé is a Scottish soul and R&B artist and songwriter. She is of mixed heritage, her father being Zambian and her mother English. She gained attention when she featured on Chipmunk’s first single, Diamond Rings, which went on to be a top 10 single on the UK charts. She has since featured on various artists’ work and has also written for respected artists such as Alicia Keys, Susan Boyle, Leona Lewis and Tinie Tempah, with Simon Cowell naming her as his favourite songwriter at the moment. She currently has a publishing deal with EMI Music Publishing and a record deal with Virgin Records.
Emeli’s first solo single Heaven dropped in August 2011 and her subsequent singles Read All About It and Next to Me have peaked at number one in the United Kingdom and in Ireland. Her star is still rising; her debut album Our Version of Events was released in February 2012 and peaked at number one in the UK. She draws inspiration from the music of Nina Simone, Lauryn Hill and Joni Mitchell.
As the daughter of a teacher, Emeli values education. She studied neuroscience for four years - two years short of becoming a doctor prior to launching her career. Although she didn’t feature in the video (she was sitting for her exams), her song with Chipmunk catapulted her into the mainstream and after a trip to New York, she decided to leave school and follow her musical dream.
