Deng was born in what is now known as South Sudan in 1985. He later moved to Egypt with his family before settling in Britain, where he was eventually granted citizenship in 2006. He attended high school in the United States in order to play basketball, and was subsequently considered the second most promising high school senior in America, after LeBron James. He entered the ‘04 NBA Draft and was picked 7th overall by the Phoenix Suns, and then immediately traded to the Chicago Bulls, where he’s been playing since and his deal is worth $71mil. Luol Deng maintains strong links with South Sudan; in 2011 he bussed Sudanese refugees into Chicago to vote for the referendum that would eventually see Africa adding a new country to its list, South Sudan. He regularly visits family in Juba and recently repped Africa when he was announced as part of the All Star team (who cares about a fine when you get to shout out the people who made you?).
And he’s Obama’s favourite basketball player.
